the blades are said to be 'engaged' when they are touching: in a change of engagement, the fencer forces the opponent's blade in a different line. Compound an attack or riposte incorporating one or more feints and thus occupying more than one period of fencing time. Counter-attack an attack made against the right-of-way, or in response to the opponent's attack. Counter-disengage an action made in response to the opponent's disengage, in which the fencer copies his opponent's movement so the blades end up where they started. Circular parry a parry which starts and finishes in the same position, the point describing a circle in order to go round the opponent's blade and then deflect it. Continuation any further offensive action by the attacker after the end of his attack. Counter-riposte an attack that follows a parry of the opponent's riposte. Counter-time an attack that draws the opponent's counter-attack, which is then parried, allowing a riposte. Corps-a-corps lit. "body-to-body"; physical contact between the two fencers during a bout, illegal in foil and sabre. Coulé also graze, glisé, or glissade; an attack or feint that slides along the opponent's blade. Coup lancé a launched hit; an attack that starts before a stop in play but lands after. Valid for normal halts, but not valid at end of time. Coupé also cut-over; an attack or deception that passes over the tip of the opponent's blade. Croisé similar to the bind: the blades remain in contact throughout and the opponent's blade is forced from the high line to the low line (or vice-versa) on the same side. Cross also crossover:an advance or retreat in which one foot passes the other. Cut an attack made with a chopping motion of the blade, landing with the edge. |
