Glossary of Fencing Terms.

n Time

when a stop-hit arrives at least one fencing time before the final movement of the attack.
Indirect
an attack or riposte that finishes in a different line to which it was formed, by means of a disengage or coupé.
Insistence
forcing an attack through the parry.
Invitation
 a line that is intentionally left open to encourage the opponent to attack.

ury

the 4 officials (corner judges) who watch for hits in a steam fencing bout.

amé

a metallic jacket used to detect valid hits in foil and sabre.
Line
the main direction of an attack (e.g., high/low, inside/outside), usually a reference to the parry that must be made to deflect the attack.
Lunge
the basic attacking movement of arm, body, and legs, in which the arm is straightened and the leading leg moves forward leaving the rear leg fully stretched and the rear foot in its
original position.

M

al-parry

a parry that fails to prevent the attack from landing.
Maraging
a special steel used for making blades; stronger and break more cleanly than conventional steels.
Martingale
a strap inside the guard which is passed around some fingers to avoid the weapon flying off if a fencer is disarmed.
Match
a competition between two fencing teams.
